HPR Race 1 Start

January 19, 2015 -- Key West, FL -- The five entries being scored HPR got off to a fast start in today's 8-12 knot conditions in Day One of Quantum Key West, quickly legging out over their rivals in the ten-boat IRC 2 Class. In near-ideal conditions of sunny skies, flat water, and a breeze that showed enough variation to be interesting but not too much to frustrate, it was Steve and Heidi Banjamin's Carkeek 40 SPOOKIE that won the first race, but not without having to come from behind Bill Coate's Ker 43 OTRA VEZ's early lead in the first half of this four-leg 8.0 mile race.

 Spookie-Otra Vez downwind

In Race 2, Leo van den Thillart's Kernan 47 TRUE looked strong to win the start at the pin end, but Peter Vroon's Ker 51 TONNERRE 4 rolled forward fast overlapped to windward, and extended this early advantage to take and hold the lead throughout this 5-leg race with 1.8-mile legs. By gaining and passing SPOOKIE in the final upwind leg, OTRA VEZ  took second and tied for the series lead on a 2-2 score line, while SPOOKIE took 3rd from TRUE by only 7 seconds in corrected time. SPOOKIE's bullet in the first race breaks the tie in points to put her first in the standings.

"Never give up - that's our motto," said Coates, echoed by OTRA VEZ tactician Mike Buckley, who were racing their first race with HPR scoring. "We were really deep in that second race, and gained it all back and more on the last lap, just by staying in phase on the shifts and puffs. And in the first race we were doing well until the final run, when we got caught in a bad lane with BELLA MENTE and then lost time to SPOOKIE. But in all, it was a great day of sailing."
